Police escorting handcuffed Son of Sam suspect David Berkowitz into headquarters in lower Manhattan.
Berkowitz was found guilty of the Son of Sam murders and argued that he had only committed the murders under the direction of a demonically possessed dog, having sent letters to this effect to the police and press during his murder spree. Later he would finally confess that this had been a pre-emptive attempt to get off on an insanity plea should he have been caught, and that the murders were motivated mostly by sexual gratification.
